Chiropractic Care Found Effective and Less Expensive Than Epidural for Treating Herniated Disc Diagnosis

Herniated Disc Pain Treatment in Alexandria

Herniated discs have bothered uncounted clients that have been treated in our Alexandria practice. Fortunately, Dr. Wagner has helped plenty of them recover speedily and more completely. Herniated discs, sometime referred to as "slipped discs", can be treated with several different remedies.

If you are suffering with irritation due to a herniated disc, then you may be asking which choice may work best for you. To support you in settling that question, let's assess two of the most commonly employed treatments: chiropractic/manipulative therapy and epidural.

Study Analyzed Results from Spinal Manipulative Therapy (SMT) and Nerve Root Injections (NRI)

A body of researchers recruited 102 individuals, all having had chronically herniated discs validated by medical imaging. Every patient selected had already received 90 days of treatment via alternatively accessible treatment options with no satisfaction.

The group of people being studied was split into two groups. One group of the patients were treated with high-velocity, low-amplitude spinal manipulation treatment (chiropractic adjustments). The remaining half of people in the study were provided nerve root injections (epidural).

The conductors of the study gathered scores regarding the pain levels of each individual in advance of the remedy provided during the study. Then, 30 days after treatment, participants graded their disc herniation discomfort on the same scoring system as before. The change between the two reports was applied to determine how useful the care was for relieving pain.

What did the researchers uncover in regards to spinal adjustments compared to nerve root injections?

Just over 76% of the participants who were given chiropractic treatments scored a reduction in their discomfort. On the other hand, not quite 63 percent of the patients who received epidurals reported an improvement in discomfort. These data indicate that chiropractic treatment could be more successful when looking to remediate herniated disc discomfort.

And, that is not all. In addition to granting a higher number of people greatly appreciated relief from pain, researchers also gleaned that chiropractic care was more affordable. The epidural treatments cost about $730 for a single individual. The chiropractic treatment was approximately $560 for an equal timespan. This type of savings can certainly assist with your health care expenses. A lower cost can make it feasible to seek care for your disc herniation pain without added hardship.
